AGATHA'S STORY
Joshua Knight bought a rusty 1963 VW transporter - Sight unseen - in 2009. A Hannover-built bus, she was shipped new to Oregon in the USA. Initially having some repairs done by Kieft en Klok in the Netherlands, it passed an MoT, before Joshua decided to carry out a full restoration.
A Chartered Mechanical Engineer by profession, Joshua tackled a lot of the mechanical work himself, giving the rusty bare shell to DC Customs in the midlands for media blasting and a full respray.
The situation was worse than expected (these things always are!), when stripped of paint, Agatha showed signs of front end damage hastily 'Bondo'd' by a previous owner. These panels were all painstakingly replaced by Darryn Coleman before a respray in the original VW Sealing Wax Red and Beige Grey paint.
Now shiny, she was still hopelessly underpowered, with here 1500cc single-port engine. Not wanting to be killed merging onto a motorway, Joshua then built a bespoke 2110cc motor using quality aftermarket parts. The objective was not to drag race, but to have a reliable, low stressed motor for reliable motorway cruising.
ABOUT US
We live in the wonderful North Downs area of Surrey​ with our two children. We spend our spare time doing triathlons and dreaming about world travel. We are an eco-conscious family. Something that's difficult to reconcile with a ICE-engined rental business, but our day-to-day commuting is taken care of in our Nissan Leaf, where possible powered by our solar panels. We'd consider turning Agatha electric one day, and are keen on VW's work in the field of converting classics to electric. It would certainly reduce time spent checking valve clearances!
